What to Expect

In Washington state, you must complete a 90-hour pre-license course approved by the Washington Department of Licensing before applying for a real estate broker license. This course is divided into two parts: a 60-hour Real Estate Fundamentals course and a 30-hour Real Estate Practices course. Our online pre-licensing courses include chapter quizzes, a final exam, and opportunities for retakes if needed.
Topics included in the course:
FAQs about Getting a Real Estate License in Washington
To make the process easier, here are the most common questions we get from students becoming agents about what it takes to get licensed and start a career in real estate.
How Much Does a Washington Real Estate License Cost?
- 90-hour pre-license education: varies by provider
- Washington broker exam fee: $210
- Original broker license fee: $233
- Fingerprinting/background check: varies by vendor
Can I Get a Washington Real Estate License If I’m Already Licensed in Another State?
Yes. Washington offers a reciprocity application path for applicants who hold an active real estate broker or managing broker license in another state, or who held one within the last six months.
You must still follow Washington’s application process, including fingerprinting/background checks and exam approval requirements. Washington’s current DOL materials do not frame this as a simple fixed state list, so it is better to direct applicants to the reciprocity process rather than list specific states.
How Often Do I Renew My Washington Real Estate License?
Washington real estate broker licenses must be renewed every 2 years.
To renew, brokers must complete the required continuing education. Washington DOL also allows renewal up to 120 days before your renewal date, and the current broker renewal fee is $233.
Do I Need a Sponsoring Broker for a Washington Real Estate License?
Yes. In Washington, brokers perform brokerage services on behalf of a real estate firm and under the supervision of a managing broker. Your page already mentions that affiliation is needed to activate and practice, and that matches DOL’s description of broker practice.
How Long Does It Take to Get a Washington Real Estate License?
The timeline depends mostly on how quickly you complete the 90-hour course, pass the two exam portions, finish fingerprinting, and submit your application. One important timing rule: once approved for the first broker exam, you must pass the state and national exams within 6 months of each other or you must retake both.
Do I need a sponsoring broker for a Wisconsin real estate license?
You do not need a sponsoring broker just to qualify for the license application itself, but to practice as a Washington real estate broker, you must work on behalf of a real estate firm and under the supervision of a managing broker.
