FAQs About Getting a Real Estate License in Montana

    Yellow bar highlighting header.

To make the process easier, here are the most common questions we get from students becoming agents about what it takes to get licensed and start a career in real estate.

How Much Do Real Estate Agents Make?

Montana real estate agents can earn a wide range of incomes, depending on a few key factors.

Agents in high-demand areas often earn more due to frequent transactions. Experience also plays a big role—seasoned agents with strong networks tend to land higher-value deals. Since income is commission-based, your earnings also depend on how many clients you serve and how much effort you put into growing your business.

While the average income is around $50,000, many agents exceed that by focusing on marketing, networking, and top-notch client service.

How Much Does a Real Estate License Cost?
    1. Pre-Licensing Coursework: $200–$400
    2. Exam Fee: Around $100
    3. License Application Fee: around $40
    4. Background Check & Fingerprint Fee: $30–$50
    5. E&O Insurance: Around $200+ per year

Is Becoming a Real Estate Agent Worth It?

Becoming a real estate agent in Montana can be a rewarding path, especially with the state’s growing population and high property demand. Whether you’re drawn to the flexibility or income potential, there’s plenty of opportunity in Montana’s market.

Some key benefits include setting your own schedule, unlimited earning potential, and making a real impact by helping clients find homes and strengthening local communities.

While the rewards are great, success takes dedication, smart marketing, and strong relationships. With the right mindset, you can thrive in this fulfilling career.

What Should I Know Before Becoming a Real Estate Agent?

Before you begin your real estate journey in Montana, keep a few key things in mind:

It takes time and dedication to complete the 70-hour course, study, and build your business. Continuing education is also important to stay current with changing laws and market trends. Success often depends on strong networking and marketing—social media, local events, and referrals can help you grow.

With focus and persistence, you’ll be on the path to a successful real estate career in Montana.

Can I Get a Real Estate License if I’m Already an Agent in Another State?

Montana doesn’t offer full licensing reciprocity, but out-of-state agents may qualify for a simplified process.

You’ll need to show proof of an active license, possibly complete reduced coursework, and pass the Montana portion of the licensing exam. Then, apply through the Montana Board of Realty Regulation’s online portal, where you’ll submit your license history and pay the required fees.

Check their website for the latest details and requirements.

How Often Do I Renew My Real Estate License?

Montana real estate licenses must be renewed every year by October 31. To maintain an active license, you’ll need to complete the Required Continuing Education (CE) hours, which is 12 hours each licensing year.

What Should I Do After Getting My Real Estate License?

Congratulations on becoming a licensed agent! Now it’s time to take the next steps. First, join your broker’s office and complete any onboarding, training, and technology setup. Networking is key, so attend local events, join professional associations, and use social media to connect with potential clients. Staying educated is also crucial—keep up with real estate trends, financing options, and marketing strategies. Finally, set clear business goals, whether you want to specialize in luxury properties or become a top listing agent, and create a plan to achieve them.
