FAQs About Getting a Real Estate License in Rhode Island

Yellow bar highlighting header.

To make the process easier, here are the most common questions we get from students becoming agents about what it takes to get licensed and start a career in real estate.

How Much Do Real Estate Agents Make?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average yearly salary for real estate agents in Rhode Island is approximately $58,830. However, your earning potential can vary depending on a few key factors:

  1. Market Focus
  2. Experience
  3. Networking & Marketing

While the average salary is around $58,830, top-producing agents can exceed six figures once they’ve built a solid client base and honed their local market expertise. With the right strategies and focus, your income potential in real estate is truly in your hands.

How Much Does a Real Estate License Cost?
  • Pre-Licensing Course: $300–$600, depending on the provider you choose.
  • Exam Fee: $50 per exam (check for any changes before paying).
  • Application Fee: Around $165 for submitting your license application.
  • Background Check: Expect to pay $45–$55, depending on the vendor.

Is Becoming a Real Estate Agent Worth It?

If you’re entrepreneurial, love meeting people, and have a passion for real estate, this career could be a great fit. Rhode Island’s market offers everything from beachfront homes to urban condos, with big earning potential for those willing to work hard and build strong networks.

What Should I Know Before Becoming a Real Estate Agent?

real estate career can be incredibly rewarding, but it’s important to know what you’re getting into.

Commission-Based Income: You earn based on the deals you close. Some months will be better than others, so flexibility and financial planning are key.

Relationships Matter: Networking isn’t optional—it’s part of the job. Building strong connections with clients, agents, and industry pros opens the door to more opportunities.

Lifelong Learning: To stay competitive (and keep your license active), you’ll need to stay current on market trends, laws, and best practices.

Persistence is Everything: Success doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time, consistency, and commitment—but the payoff can be well worth it.

If you're willing to hustle and keep growing, real estate can offer real rewards.

Can I Get a Real Estate License if I’m Already an Agent in Another State?

If you're already licensed in Connecticut or Massachusetts, you’re in luck! Rhode Island has reciprocity agreements with both states, which means you may not have to retake the entire exam. Instead, you might just need to pass the state-specific portion or submit a few key documents to get your license.

How Often Do I Renew My Real Estate License?

In Rhode Island, your real estate salesperson's license expires every two years, but to keep it in active status, you'll need to complete 24 hours of Continuing Education (CE) within those two years.

What Should I Do After Getting My Real Estate License?

Earning your real estate license is a big milestone—but now the real journey begins: launching your career. The first step is finding the right broker. Rhode Island law requires you to affiliate with a licensed real estate broker before you can start selling, so choose wisely.

Look for a brokerage that offers solid training, mentorship, and a supportive environment to help you build confidence and sharpen your skills. Next, start putting yourself out there. Build a presence on social media, create a simple website, and let your friends, family, and community know you’re open for business.

Your first few clients often come from your existing network, so don’t be afraid to share your excitement. It’s also important to get involved in the local real estate community.

Joining groups like the Rhode Island Association of REALTORS® gives you access to essential tools like the MLS, valuable networking opportunities, and ongoing education to stay ahead of the game. As you take each step forward, stay focused and committed—your real estate career is just getting started, and the possibilities are endless.
