Kansas Real Estate Exam Details

To help you prepare for the Kansas real state exam, we included information on how to schedule your exam, the exam’s format, and what you’ll be tested on. Now, all that's left to do is study with the best exam prep in the nation!

Exam Application

The Kansas real estate exams are administered by Pearson VUE. Candidates who wish to schedule an exam can do so by contacting Pearson VUE at the following site: home.pearsonvue.com/ks/realestate. Candidates may also call Pearson VUE at 800-274-4971.

Reservations should be made at least 24 hours prior to the desired exam date. 

Current Processing Timeframes: Kansas does not provide estimates of processing times.

Salesperson Exam

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and:
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must provide proof of having completed a 30-hour Principles of Real Estate course approved by the Kansas Real Estate Commission within one year immediately preceding the exam
  • Must provide proof of having completed a 30-hour Kansas Practice Course approved by the Kansas Real Estate Commission within the six months preceding the Commission's receipt of the license application
  • Must complete fingerprint cards for a background check. Fingerprint cards and Background Waiver Form REL-150 must be submitted to the Kansas Real Estate Commission, along with a $60 fee for the background check, as well as a $15 application fee. Fingerprint cards can be obtained from a police station, sheriff's office, or from the KREC. 
  • Must comply with all application procedures required by the Kansas Real Estate Commission
  • Must successfully pass the real estate salesperson license exam before the expiration of their course certificate
  • Must be an affiliate with a licensed Kansas Real Estate Broker; the application must be signed by a supervising or branch broker certifying the applicant's honesty, trustworthiness, and good reputation and must include an acknowledgment of any pending charge, conviction, diversion, or suspended imposition of sentence received by the applicant
  • Must submit license application, exam score report, and $125 licensing fee within six months of the exam date. If the parts of the exam were passed on different dates, the six-month period begins from the earlier exam date.
  • Submit a certification of license history from each state (other than Kansas) for which the applicant currently holds or has ever held, a real estate license.
  • Pay the examination fee ($82) and the license fee ($125)

Broker Exam

  • An applicant must be at least 18 years of age and:
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must submit documentation of having completed 60 hours of broker pre-license education course work approved by the Kansas Real Estate Commission
  • For candidates who are NOT applying for licensure through requirements met in another state, the requirement is a 30-hour Kansas Real Estate Broker Fundamentals course approved by the Kansas Real Estate Commission within one year immediately prior to passing both the national and state portions of the exam
  • For candidates who ARE applying for licensure through requirements met in another state, the requirement is a 4-hour Kansas Law Course approved by the Kansas Real Estate Commission within the six months immediately preceding the Commission's receipt of the license application 
  • All candidates must complete a 30-hour Kansas Real Estate Management course approved by the Kansas Real Estate Commission within the six months immediately preceding the Commission's receipt of the license application
  • Must successfully pass the real estate broker examination before the expiration of the course certificate
  • Must comply with all application procedures required by the Kansas Real Estate Commission
  • Meet the experience requirement and provide documentation in the experience section of the application. Applicants must have been licensed as a salesperson in Kansas, or as a salesperson or broker in another state and actively engaged for at least 2 years out of the last 5 in activities which require a license in Kansas. Experience in the real estate or a related business or a combination of such experience and education may be accepted if the Commission believes it qualifies the applicant to act as a broker.
  • Must complete fingerprint cards for a background check. Fingerprint cards and Background Waiver Form REL-150 must be submitted to the Kansas Real Estate Commission, along with a $60 fee for the background check, as well as a $50 application fee. Fingerprint cards can be obtained from a police station, sheriff's office, or from the KREC. 
  • The application must be signed by a supervising broker or a branch broker if the applicant is not applying to be a supervising broker
  • Must affiliate with a Kansas-licensed real estate broker responsible for supervising a primary or branch office or indicate on the application that the applicant proposes to act as a supervising broker of a primary or a branch office. If opening a new primary or branch office, submit Form RE-430 with the open office fee of $100.
  • If the applicant is applying to be a supervising broker or branch broker of a new office, complete the Open Company Form
  • Must pay the examination fee ($82) and the license fee ($175)
Exam Format

Both the salesperson and broker examinations have a national and a state portion. Candidates will have 2.5 hours for the national portion and 1.5 hours for the Kansas-specific portion. The salesperson exam has 80 national questions and 30 state-specific questions. The broker exam has 80 national questions and 40 state-specific questions.

The real estate examinations are given by computer and are multiple choice. They are given at the following locations: Hays, Overland Park, Topeka, Wichita, Emporia, Fort Riley, Garden City, Pittsburg, Salina, and Kansas City, Missouri.

Passing the Exam

Salesperson Examination: A score of 70 or higher on each portion (national and state) is passing.

Broker Examination: A score of 70 or higher on each portion (national and state) is passing.

What To Bring

All applicants are required to bring the Certificate of Completion of required course work. Additionally, they are required to provide 2 forms of identification. The name on the identification must match the name on the registration. The primary identification must be government-issued and photo-bearing with a signature, and the secondary identification must contain a valid signature. The primary identification can be any of the following:

  • Government-issued Driver's License
  • US Dept. of State Driver's License 
  • US Learner's Permit (plastic card only with photo and signature)
  • National/State/County Identification card
  • Passport
  • Passport card
  • Military ID
  • Military ID for spouses and dependents
  • Alien Registration card

The secondary form of identification may be one of the following:

  • US Social Security card
  • Debit or Credit card
  • Any form of ID from the primary list
